Filmmaker Tedy Necula Brings Film to Port Townsend Film Festival

September 26, 2023

Lights, camera, action. One of my favorite filmmakers is back at the Port Townsend Film Festival, and he brought his signature charm with him. 🎬🎥 I have followed Tedy Necula on Facebook since he was here with another film back in 2018. This year he brought his movie, The World is My Arena, a true story about a rugby player who had an accident that left him paralyzed. This morning was the last showing but you can still view this virtually with the PTFF online.

This afternoon I waited outside the theatre to capture Tedy as he left the Rose Theatre following a question-and-answer session about his movie. Tedy leaves a lasting impression on and off the screen. He has a definite charisma about him and I love capturing that with my camera. As in 2018, I had so much fun photographing him again today. So many people stopped him to chat as he headed to the door. I overheard them thanking him for his movie and telling them what an inspiration he was to them. I caught a sweet moment as he was thanked by a theatergoer. I was walking to my car as Tedy was heading off to lunch when a couple that he had been chatting with just minutes before returned. I think they had dashed off to the PT Shirt Company to buy a Port Townsend tee-shirt Tedy could wear on his return home to Romania tomorrow. I caught this series of delightful interactions as he displayed his new shirt. Then another long-time PT Film Festival supporter stopped to visit, wanting to make sure he said goodbye before Tedy left. This whole time I’m a “fly on the wall with a camera” documenting this really special series of moments.

I’m reminded of the power of photographs and the lasting impression and inspiration the kind of films, like Tedy’s bring to the PT Film Festival and the lasting connections the festival creates. I said goodbye to Tedy and dashed to my car. I tried not to speed as I headed home knowing I had caught some wonderful images and wanting to see them right away on my computer. As I culled and edited them, I realized that the wind had shifted the PTFF flags behind them so they didn’t read correctly, they were reversed. Thanks to Photoshop I was able to flip the entire image horizontally, so the flag reads properly. I’m thrilled to share these images as a permanent reminder of Tedy’s visit to the Port Townsend Film Festival. He told me this afternoon he would love to come back in the summer sometime for another visit. I look forward to his next visit.

Rakers Car Club Chauffer Filmmakers in Film Festival Parade.

A couple of local pirates stirring up trouble at the Rakers Car Parade just before the street parade. However, no one was injured in the taking of this photo. 🙂 I think every filmmaker who had a chance to ride in a cool vintage car yesterday had a great time. Thanks to Jim and the Rakers Car Club.

What an incredible weekend. Now I have so many photos to share before the next festival, the PT Film Festival in a couple of weeks. The light was incredible in the morning, afternoon, and evening. It was great to connect with people I see at each festival and to have so many incredible opportunities to get great photos. I realized I have been taking WBF photos for 20 years. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did this weekend.

Jefferson County Fair's Draft Horse Pull

August 23, 2023

Witnessing the power and beauty of draft horses at the JC Fair's Draft Horse Pull was an unforgettable experience. From their excitement as they were harnessed to the sleds/boats loaded with concrete blocks, to the camaraderie among the owners and their teams. It reminded me of the determination of Huskies at a sled race or the anticipation of my dog Hailey as we head out the door for morning walks. Once the evener bar is attached to the sled/boat they are off. Out of 150 photos, I narrowed them down to a gallery of 85 on my website. Then finally down to these smaller collages. It was a bit of a challenge to figure out which set of teamsters went with each pair of horses. I think I was told that these horses weigh 1500 and more each. Many of them are still working horses here on WA farms and some still haul lumber out of the woods.

At first, while editing, all the horses looked the same. Then I recognized they had different colored harnesses, and were different in size, coloring, and markings. I was fascinated witnessing the command the young man here, had working with his team alongside his Dad. I've added a link to The Pocket Guide to Draft Pulls which had lots of great information about what I saw at the Fair. One of the teamsters told me Jefferson County Fair was their favorite to attend every year do to the large crowds they drew and the audience's response to the teams.
The team above, I believe was the winning team pulling the sled/boat loaded with 10,000 of cement blocks. Sunshine Propane brought in their truck and hoisted each cement block that weighed 500 pounds apiece. Additional blocks were added until the final team pulled 10,000 pounds. I think I read a CA team once pulled 18,000 pounds.  I was amazed at the control and calmness this young man handled his team of horses. Raring to go, just waiting for the evener bar to be attached so they can pull the sled/boat. The team above came in second or won a Red Ribbon at the Jefferson County Fair.

This was one of my favorite photos. I can imagine this magnificent horse looking to the crowd and asking them if they are paying attention, "Are you watching me now?"

2023 Port Townsend Main Street Uptown Parade-Deja View Photography

August 20, 2023

I heard the other day they have now outlawed music in Afghanistan & are destroying all the instruments. So sad since music has the power to unite and bring such joy to people's lives. As I watched The Unexpected Brass Band perform at the PT Main Street Uptown Fair today, it reminded me of how fortunate we are to have music in our lives. Their lively performance had everyone in the crowd dancing, clapping, & smiling galore. It was a truly unforgettable experience! Just check out the audience in the background of some of my photos. I hope the band knows how much we appreciate their attendance at community events they play at & the joy they bring to our community. Thanks to Main Street & everyone who took part in the short but magnificent parade. It was a beautiful afternoon.

Join me on a trip down memory lane to last year's Port Townsend Main Street Uptown Fair! From the vibrant three-block parade to the incredible performance by The Unexpected Brass Band, this event is a crowd-pleaser. Don't miss out on the fun this year! The fair is happening today from 9-5:30.

Kids return to school soon. Consider booking a family session today.

August 11, 2023

If you liked my Rhody slideshows, capturing images on the fly, imagine if I photographed your family session this summer at Fort Worden or Chezemoka Park.

I have had the best time the last couple of months going through hundreds of Rhody Parade photos going back to 2003. I put together several slideshow/videos here on my Blog including this year's 2023 Rhody Grand Parade. I only had a few seconds to capture floats or parade participants as they quickly passed. If you liked the work you saw in the slideshows, imagine the kind of lovely images I could capture of your family during a portrait session.

Summer has finally arrived here on the Olympic Peninsula making it a perfect time to book a family session. You may be looking at your calendar and figuring out when out-of-town guests may be visiting before kids go back to school. Consider having photos taken while your family is here in Port Townsend. Fort Worden is a lovely spot as is Chetzemoka Park or even Point Hudson where this family portrait was taken. The teenagers had fun planning what color clothes the families would wear and their choices worked well for this portrait. Give me a call today to chat about having Deja View Photography photograph that anniversary party, family reunion, or special gathering yet this summer.  (360) 385-2662

Port Townsend Concert on the Dock with Kalan Wolfe & The Shift

July 28, 2023

Last night was another perfect summer night here in paradise. I hopped on the free shuttle from Park & Ride at 5:30 to head downtown for Concert on the Dock. Kalan Wolfe & The Shift rocked the stage, putting on a fantastic show that had everyone dancing. No need to worry about parking, thanks to the convenient shuttle. The shuttle is a hassle-free way to get to any of the Concert on the Dock shows this summer.

Playdates aren't just for kids!

July 22, 2023

Playdates aren't just for kids! 🐾 Today, Hailey, my 5-year-old fur baby, had a heartwarming reunion with one of her puppies, Pio, whom she hadn't seen since he was adopted 4 years ago. Pio and his family traveled from near Vancouver to spend a couple of days in Port Townsend, and we couldn't wait for our pups to have a tail-wagging good time together. The moment they met; their joy was palpable, I'm sure they recognized each other. How could Hailey forget, or not recognize, this being one of the 11 puppies she had? They raced around the yard, chased their favorite toys, and wrestled a bit, creating memories we'll cherish forever. It was fun to have Nate, and Ania, here with Pio along with Reesa and Cassie who helped foster Hailey and her pups. Now, Hailey is peacefully snoozing away in her cozy doggie bed, dreaming of the paw-some adventures they had today. Pio her puppy is on the left, and Momma Hailey is pictured on the right.

Port Townsend Dances the Night Away with Latin Jazz Band WEPA.

July 21, 2023

The weather couldn't have been more perfect for another incredible free concert on the dock in downtown Port Townsend. The Latin jazz band, WEPA, delivered an exceptional performance. The saxophonist player stole the show. I usually hang out on the fringes of the concert but last night I walked right up to the front to grab some close-ups of the band. The energy was infectious, and the crowd couldn't resist dancing along. The wind was calm, perfect for several kayakers hanging out on the bay listening to the music. I think the audience was disappointed when the band had to stop playing at 7.

The stage sponsor was PT Garden Center and PT Kinetic Sculpture sponsored the Beer Garden. Thanks to all the vendors, PT Main Street, and other sponsors that support the Concert on the Dock every year.

Capturing Memories: Event Photography in Beautiful Port Townsend.

June 19, 2023

What a fun adventure-filled day capturing the essence of Port Townsend, taking photos, and visiting with friends. I took photos at the Farmers Market where there was a food presentation for kids, the East Jefferson Fire & Rescue put a demonstration on using a fire extinguisher, and there was printmaking for kids with Northwind Art. Then over to the Community Center for the PT Library sale. From there I headed downtown to take Steampunk photos and later a walk over to Memorial Field to the Rakers Car Show. Working up an appetite I headed to Mo-Chili for a pulled pork sandwich and a delicious pecan bar which hit the spot. Now, I’m in full editing mode, fueled by lunch and my mocha from Java Gypsy. Editing photos & watching the first episode of season 7 of Outlander. My heart be still, what a nice day.

Travel back in time with these Steampunk photos.

June 16, 2023

Back in 2014, I had the pleasure of capturing these stunning ladies during Steampunk Weekend. It's hard to believe it's been that long! The evening light was incredible the night I captured these images. I think we all had a great time. Steampunk Weekend is back in Port Townsend this weekend. Visit their website for information on purchasing tickets and to view the schedule of events. Should be great fun. https://brass-screw.org/

Nothing says Summer like a picnic. Let Port Townsend Picnics create one for you.

June 12, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

When it comes to enjoying the warm weather, nothing beats a good old-fashioned picnic! That's why I'm excited to share Port Townsend Picnics, a local business that offers amazing picnic packages for all occasions. Recently I was at Chetzemoka Park checking out the light for a family session and discovered a couple enjoying one of the picnics that Alexis had created for them. An umbrella for shade, fresh flowers, comfy lounge chairs, and picnic lunch all spread out on a colorful rug. She offers a variety of picnic packages that are perfect for graduation, anniversary, or birthday parties, baby showers, wedding rehearsals and other special occasions.  In addition to picnics and parties, she also manages The Washington, with distinct boutique suites in the heart of downtown Port Townsend.

The photos above were taken by my friend Melissa of MJ Photography

Alexis is a vibrant member of the Port Townsend community geared to help you if planning to make our community a destination for your event.  It's important to support and collaborate with other businesses like theirs that contribute to the community's culture and growth. Check out the websites above and leave all the planning to her for the perfect picnic for any occasion!
